Get layered! This was one of those occasions where I could visualise the finished artwork before the client had even finished briefing me. A chaotic, but structured, fusion of urban textures and surfaces overloaded with digital techno 3D elements and decorative typography. I love the gritty contrast of shiny 3D next to the distressed grunge textures and spray painted surfaces.

Inspired by a misspent youth of entire Summers spent indoors playing videogames in darkened rooms and countless 10p’s lost to amusement arcades, this piece is heavily influenced by the first wave of classic 8-bit videogames on the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64 and classic coin-ops.

The image was modeled, lit and textured with my own custom shaders in Cinema 4D, with some minor post production in Photoshop. The stars and falling pixels and particles were setup as an animation in C4D using dynamic physics properties with the MoGraph module, so the final render is actually a still frame from a 30 second animation. That way I achieved the realistic motion blur and movement of the falling objects.

UK author Shaun Othen commissioned me to design the covers of three of his books, starting with Taxi. The books’ plot is about the owner of a taxi company who behaves like a modern day Caligula, and treats his employees as slaves.

We wanted a feeling of grimy sleaziness to come across in the book cover illustration, so we went for a burned out neon sign 3D typography treatment, composed with gritty urban surfaces and grunge textures. The type was created in Illustrator and imported into Photoshop for texturing and lighting, the fine details were added with lots of brush work and plenty of adjustment layers.

This album of evil and menacing trailer cues demanded something epic and dark for the cover, and also needed to communicate the concept that the album is a toolkit for movie trailer producers. I came up with the idea of an epic steampunk illustration that looks like it was constructed from futuristic junk, fused with organic elements and mechanical parts.
